GREENWICH BASEMENT & KITCHEN EXTENSION

MJ Rooney undertook a complex residential refurbishment in Greenwich, London, involving a full basement lowering and rear extension to create a light-filled kitchen and dining space. The scope of works included traditional underpinning, temporary works, and the installation of a large new structural steel “picture frame” to the rear elevation, forming the structural framework for the new basement footprint. 

A central aim of the project was to open up the space and create a seamless connection between the kitchen, dining area and garden. This required close coordination between the basement construction and rear extension works, alongside accurate setting out to achieve consistent floor levels, clear structural spans and smooth integration between the existing property and the new structure. 

The completed kitchen and dining space is calm, well-proportioned, and flooded with natural light. The island forms the centrepiece of the room, supporting both everyday living and entertaining, while integrated storage and clean lines allow the space to function efficiently without visual clutter.
